The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - Coleridge (illustrated by Dore)
London Dore Gallery,1875 (MDCCCLXXV) Printed in Corbeil, France, this particular British edition seems elusive. No longer in one piece, this giant folio is of interest now for its individual plates, which could be framed, or the whole perhaps rebound. It measures 380mm x 505mm (15 x 20 inches) so it will be a very large flat parcel that will require additional postage.
We will send more photographs to anyone interested in this piece.
The text block has detached from the boards, spine is missing. The front board has a small, hard blob of what could be paint, but we have left it untouched so that any restorer might have a better chance of removing it professionally. Back board has a stain, possibly black ink or paint. The edges are worn at the corners. Sellotape burns can be seen on the boards where someone tried to tape it all together.
Title page and frontispiece present, then the poem (complete) with spotted foxing in places. All 38 plates follow, each still protected with tissue. These are bright and crisp (all the pages still have a good gloss to them) but some plates have more mild foxing towards the corners and/or edges than others.
Similar condition items are being listed at around R6000 in the USA, primarily the 1896 U.S. edition (for which one chappie on Abebooks is asking the equivalent of R40000 :O even though all of its pages are completely loose.)
